Before you jump into the car for a quick trip to your local supermarket, and start stocking up on more fruits than you could consume in a month, even with your friends and family pitching in (un)willingly to help, let me just give you a quick reality check on your journey to become super skinny super fast.
Don’t get me wrong. Fruit is great for your skin and health, and will help you lose weight fast. But to maximize your weight loss, there are a few crucial mistakes you’ve got to avoid first.
Mistake #1:
Don’t go ballistic over bananas! (And the like.)
The key here is to understand that not all fruits have the same calorie density. Some fruits, while being great for your health, have too much natural sugar in them to be worth indulging in too often, as they could very well be messing up your weight loss attempts and be the hidden sabotage stopping you from getting that skinny, fit body you’re drooling at the thought of.
Simple Solution: Just limit those very sweet tropical fruits like mango, papaya, pineapple and banana and stick to those that aren’t overly sweet. (Don’t worry, strawberries, melon and oranges and the like are okay.)
Mistake #2:
I’ve had people tell me proudly of how they stuck religiously to the ‘five a day’ fruit schedule, but didn’t understand why their waistbands seemed to be expanding. Shouldn’t they be losing weight, slimming down and feeling healthier with all that fruit in their system?
My first response is – ‘is it dried and canned fruit you’re filling up on?’ Their obvious wonder at how I knew that makes me laugh.
You see, because all the natural water in dried fruit is gone, it takes a lot more of it to fill you up, and you end up eating way more than you usually would. Think of the amount of prunes versus plums you can polish off in a sitting. Voila! Unintentional, unnecessary and completely avoidable weight gain.
It gets worse. The drying process concentrates the sugar in dried fruit, and many are further sweetened by the use of that big diet no-no: high fructose corn syrup – deadly in any attempt at losing weight.
Simple Solution: Make sure you go fresh with your fruit.
Mistake #3:
A lot of people fail to understand that fruit means fruit – in its simple and natural form. That means not confusing apple with apple pie, oranges with orange juice, or virtuously eating strawberries…slathered in cream. Obvious, I know, but many people miss that, and wonder, in all seriousness, why their fruit eating regimen isn’t helping them lose weight.
Simple Solution: Eat the fruits you like so you won’t be tempted to overindulge, and if you do want a little sugar on your grapefruit, that’s okay. Just don’t go overboard.
An extra tip - the juicier the fruit is, the better – that means it’s full of water, which makes you feel full without adding extra calories to your waistline.
